Chapter 1:

The happy little village of St Clouds was a very special settlement filled with dwarfs the makers of toys. It was located far north where men and women are prohibited to go because it is so cold.

The men and women dwarfs of Saint Clouds had a tradition so old they forgot why they lived so far away from everyone. A very long time ago the town mayor of a little town named Saint Clause the closest village to  Saint Clouds  had banned their ancestors from living in the village with all the rest of the people just because they were dwarfs.  But it happened so long ago no one remembers the exact story, not even the people of Saint Clause who had forgotten the decree and permitted the dwarfs a building which the dwarfs turned into second hand store.  The dwarfs recycled and repaired the town’s toys and made new toys.  The people of Saint Clause were very happy with their services.

Then one day on the doorstep to their factory a baby all bundled up was placed.   The dwarf men and women who discovered him on their doorstep found a  note which read, “This child is a dwarf. Please take care of him.”

They all looked at  each other and happily took the boy inside.  They looked at the young boy who smiled  at them.

“He does not have a name,” said Happy who was one of the dwarfs.

“What shall we name him?” Asked another dwarf.

“It is Christmas time,” said Smiles, a happy dwarf, a female dwarf.

“Let us call him Christopher because we got him in Christmas.”

All the dwarfs looked at each other and agreed.

“What about a second name?” Suggested Whirl,  a young dwarf who made all the toys that spin.

The dwarfs looked at each other and then to the Cathedral and one of them said “let his second name be after St. Nicolas for whom our cathedral is named.”

And all the dwarfs looked at each other and then agreed.

Then “Drei” responded.  “I think Chris should have a third name,” and the other two dwarfs agreed.  “Drei” was one of three dwarfs named three all who loved to do things three times and were experts in all things with the number three.  But when you called Drei, all three dwarfs would come, but only one would speak, sometimes.  It was like that with all dwarfs named after numbers all the way to the number 12 where it stopped.  The theory was, and this was Forest’s idea, when one would go missing or get sick, another would be right there. Another reason was education. Forest said numbers are important and this way all dwarfs would always have to deal with “the numbers” which is what this group of dwarfs were collectively called.  But it stopped at 12.   A room could get pretty crowded if a person was not careful when working with dwarfs.

And so Drei and his dwarfs pondered the suggestion and in unison walked back and forth three times with their arms behind their backs looking pensive.  They looked up to heaven three times and back to the ground three times.  They then all closed their eyes and opened them three times and on the third time they opened them, Kringle a dwarf who always [had] a frown on his face stood before him.

“I hate it when you do that,” said Kringle  and so Drei quickly wrote down Kringle as a third name and presented it to the other dwarfs in the room.

“The name has to have reason,”  said Cook walking into the room with baby’s formula.

And Drei spoke, “Kringle is our oldest member and always saying he is going into  business on his own and become a cobbler .  What will we do if he leaves us? “

“He is right” said Scribe, the record keeper for the Dwarfs.

“We always replace each other using the same names when someone leaves. That is how we started.”

The dwarfs did this so they might always be synchronized with each other.

“Kringle it is”  said Scribe and all the dwarfs looked at each other and agreed and that became Chris’s third name.

“He needs a fourth name,” said Vier who walked into the room with four more dwarfs following,

And Eins, Zwei, Drei each whose name is a number which precedes four agreed.  So did their pairings. The room was getting full and Scribe looked at all the dwarfs for ideas when Nose approached with the town’s new sign which had just refinished.  Nose held  up the sign and it read, “Welcome to St. Clause.”

It was like a sign from Heaven.  And the room now crowded and filled with dwarfs all looked at each other and agreed.

“His fourth name will be Clause because that is where he comes from,” said Nose.

“It makes sense,” said Scribe who pulled out large scroll and began to recorded it immediately. When he finished it he showed all the dwarfs.  It read

“On this day Christopher, Nicolas, Kringle, Clause was named.

“We don’t know when he was born?” Said Scribe

“How do we know he is really a dwarf?” asked Kringle the dwarf.

“We will not until he grows up.” Said scribe. “But we have to raise him by faith”  he finished and he picked up the little baby in his arms..
